Safety and entertainment with high definition TV at work and homeIn the last decade, how we watch programmes and films has changed enormously. The advent of digital television has meant that sharper, more lifelike pictures are possible with home entertainment appliances these days. If you have the space and go for a really big TV, the initial effect can be quite stunning. They come equipped with surround sound speaker systems and the visible screen size can be over fifty inches. In the right setting it can give you a taste of that big screen excitement that still draws people to the cinema on a regular basis. They are also great for watching popular sporting events and if you invite a crowd to join you can create a fun atmosphere. The larger models can come with technology to enhance the texture of pictures, making for an even more lifelike experience. Modern units have not only improved people’s home viewing but have proved invaluable in the workplace, too. Where space is often at a premium but the largest screen possible is desired, the newer slim designs fit in very well. With an up to date DVD player you can utilise the visual impact of higher definition images to good effect, when showing safety videos and corporate presentations. We all know how important safety is in an industrial setting and this technology helps to bring the material to life and make it more memorable to company employees. Anything that helps to cut down on accidents can only be a good thing. ![]() Saving for a rainy day As well as their usefulness at work, the enhancement they bring to regular TV programming makes upgrading, if you still have a standard definition model, well worth thinking about, too. If you have a busy professional and social life, there will be times when you really want to catch a programme that is on whilst you are out. Whilst the ability to record them and watch them later is nothing new, a DVD recorder has advantages over older methods. The space needed to store your favourite discs to watch on a rainy day is negligible and tangled tapes being eaten by an unhappy VHS machine can be a thing of the past. There are also useful programmes broadcast sometimes that can be recorded and shown at work at your convenience. You can find various training videos to help in the workplace, too. Warehouse and factory environments are very well regulated in the UK but it still pays to keep on top of staff training and raising awareness to possible dangers in the workplace. An upscaling DVD player can be used to play older material. It will scale the picture quality up to near high definition standard when you play it back. There is a lot of footage out there that is still very relevant to training procedures in potentially hazardous environments and it is useful to be able to watch it with a picture quality similar to the latest offerings. At work and at home, high definition TV gives you a clearer picture of events. ![]() The best things can come in small packages With the emphasis so far on bigger and better screens providing bigger and better sound and pictures, you may find this heading something of a contradiction. The largest screen possible is not ideal for every situation though. If you want to be able to relax and fall asleep while watching a film in your bedroom or catch a programme while working in your study, then a smaller model is more practical. When you are in a smaller room, you will naturally be sitting closer to the appliance and therefore do not need acres of screen right in front of your face. A more modest sound system will also be adequate for this scenario. You should not be fooled into thinking that you have to compromise on picture quality with a small TV though. They are capable of producing high definition images and, although the sound may be less powerful than on the larger models, they are still available with full surround sound effects. At work, if you are involved in choosing and editing instructional videos, then a compact model for your office is useful to have. They can also be employed around the office to display company announcements and promotional videos in reception, for waiting visitors. A forward thinking company needs to keep up to date with the latest technology and HD TV is definitely here to stay. As more and more material is being produced in this format, older models will become obsolete and need replacing. ![]() Getting the most from your equipment As manufacturers agree on various standards for data transfer and connections, it is easier to use all your electronic equipment together. With many of the newer disc players, older transfer formats are not capable of retaining the higher picture quality when connected to your television. HDMI is the preferred standard for connecting your unit to computers, game consoles and other accessories. It transmits uncompressed digital data and does not lose any definition in the process, so is ideal for new models, which should all have such an interface. If you are producing images on your computer for display at work then it is also the best way to connect your laptop to the screen in the office and view the results with the best quality possible. If you have any areas in the workplace where your vision is obstructed and there are screens in place to give warning of what may be approaching around the corner, to avoid fork lift accidents for example, then you may want to think about upgrading these too so everyone has a clearer picture of possible danger. You would need to make sure you are using the right cameras too of course, or there will be no improvement in the quality of the images. It is difficult to think of any disadvantages to an LCD TV nowadays. Early models had various issues that have since been taken care of, as happens with most new technology as it beds down and becomes more widespread in use. ![]() |
